Patent Application Specifications
There is a lot that goes into a patent application. In order for the USPTO to grant a patent, they must be sure that everything is in order. This means that the details of a patent application must be very specific in most cases. This is where specification comes in.
A patent specification must be submitted with the patent application. It is a document that describes the invention, and proposes the scope of protection for the patent. Generally, the specification should contain sections devoted to the background and overview of the invention, a description, and the embodiments of the invention.
A patent specification often contains some sort of figure to help explain the invention. Depending on the background of the invention, this could include biological references, computer code, or diagrams among other things. Generally, this is accompanied by a summary of the invention and a title for the application.
For the most part, patent descriptions cannot be changed once they are filed. This makes it extremely important to correctly complete this part of the application the first time around. It is also very important to adhere to the submission rules of the patent office. This generally includes things such as paper size, layout and the order of sections. It could be detrimental to have a patent rejected because of something so simple.
